By overseeing the health and safety of our public trees, the Tree Committee is a vital part of our community. We work in accordance with the Harpers Ferry Tree Conservation Ordinance and the Comprehensive Plan of 2007. As a member of the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA program, we will continue on our mission for many years to come.

Conservation Trees Protect Chesapeake Bay
Fresh and salt water mingle in historic Chesapeake Bay, America's
largest estuary. This natural mix in the Bay's waters make it perfect
for some 300 species of fish and shellfish, birds such as falcons,
eagles, and plovers, and a Noah's Ark of other animal life. But the
Chesapeake Bay is a troubled body of water.
Commercial productivity is down, a significant 'marine dead zone' has
been found, and several years ago swimmers were warned out of the water
due to skin rashes. The good news is that mighty efforts are underway
to clean up the Chesapeake. Not surprisingly, conservation trees are

Health Alert: Bacterial Leaf Scorch
In
recent years, bacterial leaf scorch (BLS) has devastated many landscape
and shade trees in West Virginia’s urban forests. It was first found in 1992 in Middleway, Jefferson County, on red oak. Click here to read more about this potentially-disastrous shade tree aflliction.
